Let’s Talk Business!

Let’s talk business! I don’t know many instructors including myself that over the years haven't done things for free or just not got paid for the extra hours and effort put in. It's a horrible feeling and it is catching one that once it starts it can sometimes be hard to shake off. I want you to look around your area and check out the businesses around you. Look at the ones you consider as successful whether it’s a local or global company now ask yourself
- What are they doing?
- Do they give away freebies?
- If they do are they actually factoring the free costs into other payments they might receive or are they doing it as part of their marketing budget?
Now ask yourself do you think they feel guilty for charging full price for their services? ..... no? So why should you? If you are one of the many fitpros that do feel guilty STOP! Once you start giving away things for free people will expect you to maintain this. For example have you ever worked for a club that gives away free towels and then stops ......... its not pretty. The reson clubs have had to stop in the past is because the cost of supplying the towels is suddenly higher than what was origionally budgeted for, if budgeted at all.
Before you give a quote for a class or a personal training session either have your costs prepared, or give yourself time to take into account all your expenditure and costs before throwing a figure out there. My conscience saver when it comes to giving costs and quotes is that I have a set pricelists and this REALLY helps me stick to my costs.
Think about it no one would look at a hairdresser’s pricelist and still walk to the salon expecting them to throw in a freebi or discount. WHY because they are the professional they know what they are doing and that's why we go to them.
You Are Your Brand
Do you know why?
- People want to employ you?
- Why people choose you as their instructor/PT?
- Do people know what you do?
If you don’t know the answers to all or any of these questions you need to find out quick!
Own Your Class
After working for chains for a long time and managing studios I can remember being told members go to classes for the specific workouts not for the instructor’s hmmmmm ..... Looking at it logically in some cases I kind of agree especially when it comes to specialist sessions (which can be an advantage for you, as you can use your specialist class as your unique selling point) but if it’s a standard timetable session such as legs, bums, tums it’s all about you, and the product you produce. So make that class you teach your own and that doesn’t’t necessarily mean by going crazy with choreography just think outside your box for example
- Is it equipment based class and can you retail the equipment for a profit?
- Can you offer something extra to the session like a package, information, nutrition advice etc,
- Can you offer private training to support what you teach?
Know Your Business
If I can give you one tip it would be not to plead ignorant to your books! Know your business, know what works, know what sells, what could sell and what people enjoy you teaching. Know the competition in your area, know their business and finally what will bring in your numbers and the £s.
Big Step
I totally understand that going into fitness and teaching fulltime is a huge step and a scary one. and to be honest I recommend it's something you seriously consider before doing. You need to be honest with yourswelf and ask yourself is there a demand or true potential market for you to grow and thrive? If not create your demand before you jump.
I sprinted into fulltime teaching with pretty much verbal promises from coordinators (who came through for me thank you so much) in my area and not a lot else. If I could get back those sleepless night and lost time/income from not creating a demand first I would have planned and used my classes, PTs and gym work to help create more database and brand awareness.
The good news is if there is a demand it means people really do want you to be part of their health and fitness experience so take it with both hands and run with it.
Good Luck!
