Top 6 Tips For Surviving Christmas

05.12.2011

Jackie Diss

Jackie Diss

Owner Of jackiediss.co.uk

The christmas season is on its way along with the mince pies, chocolates and large helpings of turkey.  So how can you survive christmas without feeling like scrooge at every mealtime?

Step 1 Pace yourself

That’s right step away from the buffet and be aware of the nibbles I know I sound bah humbug but just because its Christmas doesn’t mean your daily intake should triple in size.

For anyone that is trying to eat healthily and in moderation, Christmas can seem full of temptation.  For example as you get to around 10am the office the tins of chocolates come out, then there are all the Christmas parties and finally Christmas day.  But as boxing day arrives it still isn't over, because you now spend the rest of the holiday with family and friends who are feeding you their leftovers.

  • Avoid piling your plate high
  • Ask yourself are you really hungry
  • Ask yourself do you need this
  • Remind yourself of all the 'other' little treats you have had

Step 2 My Tip For Surviving Eating Out

Imagine this you, you've slaved away all day over the cooker only for someone to not eat what you have prepared or is sitting there picking out pieces of the meal.  Do you feel a) upset because they arent eating it or b) upset because they didnt tell you they can't eat it?  Eating heathily over christmas is not a crime and telling your host or hostess in advance that there are some things you will not be eating is very rarely a problem.  I find with food honesty is the best policy and believe me I have learnt about this over the years as I have suffered with diary for over 12 years.

If you feel your food requests might cause a problem I always offer to bring my own alternative which so far I have never had to do because my lovely hosts are more than happy to mix up a different sauce etc for me and this can be the same for you.  So my top tips are ........

  • Be honest with the host or hostess in regards to food and portion sizes
  • Set yourself a buffet limit
  • Avoid grazing alllllllll day
  • Fill the majority of your plate or bowl with your 5 a day and of course the roast chicken, turkey etc and just be portion friendly with the high sugar and fat foods
  • Don’t deny yourself anything just remember to eat in moderation

Step 3 Get Active

Lets be honest there are far more exciting and fun things to do at this time of year that doesn’t include exercise.  Well I have some good news for you here are a few things that can keep you active and still keep you full of festive cheer

  • Dancing at all the Christmas parties
  • Christmas shopping
  • Putting the Christmas decs up
  • Ice Skating
  • Wii fit

And when you do have time to focus your training set yourself 20-30 minutes aside and really go for it (I have uploaded a Christmas workout for you to try)

Step 4 Those LITTLE Extras DO Count

Fast forward to 2 weeks later and the habits have formed of a few choccies with breakfast, christmas cake with your lunch and evening dinner portions seemed to have grown in size.  Then you go to slip into your little new years number and uh oh it doesnt fit .......how did that happen?!?!?!

Well I will tell you ....... so you have been Christmas shopping and you fancy a latte and possibly a Christmas muffin as a little treat, you get home and unpack some of the Christmas shopping and crack open the first tin of chocolates.  You then go to the fridge and sample a few of the cheeses, pickles and crackers you bought and decide to wash it down with a few glasses of red wine.  As you put up the Christmas decs you fancy a few more choccies.

So here are my top tips for keeping an eye on the treats

  • Firstly and most importantly keep a good routine
  • Eat Breakfast every day
  • Avoid to much snacking
  • Eat till you feel comforatable not full or bursting
  • Just cause you visit 3 friends in one day doesnt mean you can have 3 pieces of cake treat yourself once a day if you are exercising or 2 times a week if you dont have time.
  • I know I keep saying it but watch the buffet portions as one mini sausage roll can easily turn into ten
  • Avoid thinking 'Sod it it's christmas' I will have it any way

My survival tips for ‘If its Christmas it doesn’t count’

  • Do not deny yourself anything BUT be aware as little extra DO count
  • Create some balance if you are going to have that latte whilst out shop it’s time to start power walking
  • Spread your treats out over the days/weeks believe me that turkey and Christmas cake WILL be there tomorrow
  • Take your time as you eat your treat and really savour the flavour rather than eating quickly or on the go
  • It’s ok to say no, remember you do not have to eat something because it’s there

Step 5 Shopping Trolly Dash

Christmas has spread itself further into November each year and with left over’s still rolling into the first week of January it's not suprising more and more peole are finding they gain a few christmas pud pounds.

Every year as I walk past peoples trolleys that are piled high with booze and Christmas pud and I walk past feeling a little confused, as i’m sure for years now shops only shut on Christmas day?!  So why the panic buy and why buy so much?  I understand feeding the family over christmas can need A LOT of turkey but sometimes do we stock our cupboards with excess grub that if it wasnt christmas we wouldnt eat it?

My Survival tips for the ‘just in case cupboard stocker’

  • Plan your meals and mouths to feed to avoid shopping with your eyes & stomach
  • Buy in for the occasion so you are not left with so many leftovers
  • And if you do run out there is always somewhere to go for a little restock
  • Check your shoping balance Are you a booze, dessert of nibbles buyer make sure you throw in some veggies and fruit

Step 6 Party Hard

That’s right I am encouraging you to go and hit that dance floor and go out and about over Christmas.  It is very easy as the cold weather hits to sit in and hibernate which let’s be honest often leads to many glasses of wine and cracking open the mince pies.  If you want to keep nice and toastie over the Christmas period or find someone that can help you feel toastie (wink wink) its time to put on your best outfit and get out there!

My survival tips for the party animals

  • Get some shoe gel pads
  • Alternate the vino with water
  • Eat before you go out to stop you munching and also to line your stomach
  • Walk into a room confident with your head held high and a smile on your face
  • Hit the dancefloor

I hope you have a fantastic christma
