If music be the food of love .......then lets rock on!!!
The summer has finally started and maintaining that exercise momentum can be tough, so I thought I would share what REALLY gets me out of bed in the morning to go for my 6am run. The secret is ........ music and at 6am it has to be LOUD music but once my alarm starts playing my enthusiasm to get moving can be quickly fired up! Even if you are not an early morning runner like myself playing music on the way to the gym or before/during your home work out can really help set your mind for exercise.
I am not a trained dancer but I am more than happy to shake it like Beyonce on a nightclub dance floor , at a wedding or round my house with a feather duster in hand. Improving your fitness level is all about getting your body moving, your mind focused and your heart rate up. So if a 6am run doesn’t tempt you but you love to dance/move there is no better time to take advantage of the dance crazes that are influencing how we work out right now. For example Ballet Conditioning, the new Zumba sensation, Street dance/hip-hop or even Pilates ........yes Pilates. Many dancers attend Pilates classes to help strengthen their body from the core outwards helping them create long and lean bodies remember ‘If you want to look like a dancer you need to train like a dancer’.
However if dance classes leave you with a feeling of dread, fear not as music can still positively influence how you exercise such as providing a
- Great motivational Tool
- Great pacemaker for time and speed
- Intensity monitor
Here are a few ideas on how to schedule your music for a home interval training workout.
Interval training is a mix of high and low intensity training within set blocks of time. This means it can help you build up your fitness levels, decrease your recovery time therefore meaning you can work harder for longer which means BURNING MORE CALORIES!
Here is an example of an Interval Training Session
If you normally run at 6kph for 10 minutes but your goal is to get to 7.5kph for 10 minutes your interval training sessions would look like this
- Warm up 5 minutes minimum (build up to your 6kph)
- Interval 1 – 7.5kph for 1 minute
- Rest – 2 minutes at either a fast walk or if you can 6kph
- Interval 2 – 7.5kph for 1 minute
- Rest – 2 minutes at either a fast walk or if you can 6kph
- Interval 3 – 7.5kph for 1 minute
- Rest – 2 minutes at either a fast walk or if you can 6kph
Progressions
Step 1 - Start to decrease the Rest periods to 1 minute and progress your power walk to a 6kph jog
Step 2 – Start to increase your Interval time from 1 minute to 90 seconds and then to 2 minutes
TOP TIP: Your intervals 1, 2 and 3 should feel HARD approximately at an intensity of 8-9 (1 is easy/relaxed – 10 total maximum VERY VERY HARD).
Jackie’s Top Music Tips
- The sing a long test if great if you often find that you burn out quickly by starting to intensely with your workout. So if you are just out of breathe but can still sing you are working at a great level that will help you improve your fitness and take you to the end of your work out.
- Choose a warm up track that gets your mind focused and your foot tapping
- If you are exercising or running and you like working to a beat try and choose songs with approx 80-120 BPM (Beats per Minute)
- It doesn’t matter if you love Cliff Richards; funky house or poptastic tunes choose your favourite tracks and keep renewing track lists to avoid music boredom
- I recommend for your actual workout time either choose your favourites OR if you are doing an interval training session alternate between a fast and slow song
- If you don’t have a treadmill or stopwatch do the lamppost run (sprint to one lamppost and walk past 2 for recovery) and keep that music pumping.
- For cool down choose a track that will help you relax
My Training Tracklist
- Girls – Sugarbabes
- FML – Deadmau5
- Firework – Katy Perry
- The Time (Dirty Bit) – The Black Eyed Peas
- Warriors Dance – Prodidgy
- Katy On a Mission – Katy B
- Cooler Than Me – Mike Posner
- Whats My Name? – Rihanna & Drake
- Barbera Streisand – Duck Sauce
- Broken Arrow – Pixie Lott
