Doing It for Ourselves

This article is about my transition from working for a fitness company to becoming a freelance trainer and how I am growing my business now that I am self-employed.
18 months ago I decided to take the leap and leave my Fitness Manager role and go Freelance. I had built a good client base and taught 5 classes a week through the gym I was employed at, so I felt comfortable knowing that this could support as I started out on my own. I wanted to be able to branch out and grow without the comfort of my employed/structured surroundings.
Within the first month of going self-employed I picked up two new classes and two new clients all through word of mouth. Training people away from a gym meant I could use more of my knowledge and start to think outside my usual PT style. I loved being able to give people a training regime without them even leaving their house, making it more effective for the individual. When someone allows you into their home, you instantly create a bond and trust and you really get to know them. This helps with understanding their way of thinking and their lifestyle, enabling you to effectively train them getting the results they require. You get to know what makes them tick!
From this point my business started to grow and I increased both my client and class base by nearly 50% in the first year. This then got me thinking….what next? I love what I do and believe Personal Training is the most effective way to get the results you want, however, not everybody can afford PT and what happens to the people that are too intimidated to go to a gym or even approach a trainer??? Even people that train with a PT for a couple of hours every week still require self-motivated to live a healthy lifestyle for the remaining 168 hours when they are not with their trainer.
This is when I decided to setup HD Fitness on-line. This site is aimed to fill that gap, providing people with knowledge, motivation and education on health and fitness. I also want it to be an opportunity for people in similar positions to share their accomplishments and opinions on diet and training with others.
Members of HD Fitness will be able to have contact with me to get support, motivation and answers all via the site. The site is due to go live this month so go visit it and take advantage of the information on there. If you sign up in the first month of the launch you can get a free HIIT workout and a food diary. Refer a friend too and you will receive a free copy of HD Fitness diet plan.
My new ventures I am working on at the minute are local Community Classes. I have teamed up with two fellow Personal Trainers that I know and trust. Calvin Crook and I have designed FIT Circuits. This class takes place in our local park, providing plenty of fresh air and lots of space with no overheads. We run this class on a Saturday morning and it is already really popular, come rain or shine our participants continue to come back. It is a circuit format with different stations working the whole body and is for all abilities. We work on stabilisation, conditioning, strength and the cardiovascular system, ensuring our members burn lots of calories and get FIT Circuits fit!! With our experience and knowledge we are able to give plenty of effective, varied and “quirky” fun exercises resulting in Fun Intense Training!!!
My second new venture is Group Personal Training. Stuart Sinclair and I have designed two classes, Fit and Functional and Super Seniors. We wanted to make Personal Training available to more people and by having a small group (max 10 people) we can cut the cost individually but still ensure a profit ourselves. As we are both Personal Trainers we can create specific, effective and functional sessions for everyone using equipment such as swissballs, medicine balls, bozu’s, resistance bands and lots more.
We can work closely with our participants as there is two of us and really educate them on how to workout effectively rather than spending hours on workouts that aren’t giving them the results they want. Our Fit and Functional class provides a child minding service for the session to guarantee that Mum’s can also get a workout in every week. Super Seniors is a great class for the older generation. It is very important that this age group stay active. We provide a workout that strengthens muscle and bones, works on posture and balance and helps with everyday aches and pains. We also provide a safe, comfortable and social environment for them to train and meet other Super Seniors.
I feel very privileged that every day I get up and know I can share my knowledge and passion to make a difference and give people a better way of living.
